2 DIY Boys Birthday Cakes + New 30-Day Challenge

Do weekends go by faster in the summertime? I think so.

We celebrated the boys’ birthdays (one turned 9 in June, the other turns 10 in July) and remember how I talked about spending 3 hours making them? They turned out amazing!

They each chose what they wanted and I helped them make it come to life. They did a really great job!

Here’s B’s:

This is the infamous “Chocolate Lasagna” I’ve seen floating around Pinterest. The original source is here.

We cut the pieces in 3 x 3″ squares and that was way too big. This stuff is rich! I’m sure we could’ve gotten away with handing out 1 x 1″ pieces just fine. It was really delicious though!

Next up, here’s G’s:

vanilla birthday cake

This is a two-layer 8″ round vanilla cake with crushed Oreos sprinkled on top. He also requested that the bottom of the cake have an Oreo crust so we did that too and it actually worked out pretty well!

As far as the cake recipe goes, I basically followed the box with just a couple of changes:

  • Added 1 package of vanilla pudding mix
  • Subbed 1/4 cup oil and 1/2 cup plain yogurt (for the 3/4 cup oil that the box calls for)
  • Bake time was approximately 45-50 minutes and it was perfect!

The frosting was amazing. I always make buttercream frosting so I followed the recipe I always use (link below) and then I also added in one 8-ounce package of cream cheese.

Best frosting ever.

I pulled the trigger. A new workout is headed my way!

Focus T25 is an Insanity-ish style workout that lasts only 25 minutes. I haven’t attempted Insanity yet, though I hope to at some point, but I’m thrilled these workouts are basically cut in HALF compared to Insanity workouts.

  2. Not a cake fan but yours turned out great! How did you get the numbers so perfect?

    I haven’t heard of Focus T5 before. If it’s like Insanity I’m assuming it’s all body weight based.

    • Thank you! :) I just traced a big number, cut it out and placed it on the cake and then the boys sprinkled all around it. Another idea from Pinterest!

      It appears to be a lot of body-weight movements. I’ve also seen dumbbells used in some of the workouts so we’ll see! I haven’t ever done any of Shaun T’s workouts so I’m a little nervous. 25 minutes shouldn’t be too bad…!
