Jackie Warner isn’t just a celebrity personal trainer, she starred in and produced Thintervention with Jackie Warner and she’s also a New York Times best-selling author. Her latest book 10 Pounds, 10 Days was actually just released today. What a great way to celebrate the first day of spring!
I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to speak with Jackie and ask her a few questions about food and fitness to see what her thoughts were. Needless to say, I was honored to have such a great opportunity and to be able to share some of her expertise with you.
“75%. Nutrients and healthy foods in your system are important on a daily basis and for weight loss. Food is much more important than exercise when it comes to losing abdominal fat.” See? Crunches don’t make bellies flat, food does.
What is your best eating tip for those who struggle to eat healthy?
Talk about keeping it real. Here’s what Jackie had to say, “Even if you make bad choices, still continue to put fat burning foods in your system. Even if you eat fast food or are eating unhealthy, make sure you get something like half a grapefruit, 1/2 cup oatmeal, 2 eggs; just make sure to eat because it’ll also help keep your hormones balanced.”
What do you think is the best way to determine how many calories should be eaten per day?
This was probably the most shocking answer I heard during our conversation. She explained to me that on her show Thintervention, they actually had the contestants work with a doctor who had them consuming roughly the SAME number of calories. This was regardless of height, weight and age. The women were eating right around 1,500 calories while the men were eating around 1,800 calories. (I should specify these are calorie counts for WEIGHT LOSS – not maintenance or performance gains.)
How many meals do you eat per day?
“I eat 5-6 meals per day and I make sure to eat every 2-3 hours.” She explained that she has a very high metabolism and it’s more difficult for her to put on muscle, so she eats more than the average person of her size and activity level. She also said that the more muscle mass you have, the more you’ll need to eat to maintain it and to eat even MORE if you’re actively trying to build lean muscle.
So many people think you have to work out for endless amounts of hours to get great results. How many hours per week do you workout and how long should the average person expect to spend working out to reap the benefits?
“One hour, six days a week. For me, it’s not how long, it’s how strong.” Jackie went on to say that if you’re doing 20 minutes of high-intensity work, it’s plenty of time. That 20 minutes should NOT feel like a walk in the park. She also mentioned that there’s no reason to do a workout for longer than 40 minutes if the intensity is high enough.
With people wanting to get in “beach body” shape for summer, what do you recommend for fast fat loss?
For this question, she immediately referred to her brand new book, 10 pounds in 10 days. Reason being? It’s about real people who want to achieve fast fat loss but who are also looking to keep the weight off. (more on that below)
What do you say to the people who swear that they’ve tried everything and nothing works for them?
“They’ve probably tried diets.” Boom. I found myself shaking my head “yes” when I heard that. “Find something that really works for your lifestyle.” Some of her helpful tips included the need to be disciplined, finding foods and workouts that fit with a person’s lifestyle and also more realistic goal-setting. She also suggested that people make meals or snacks portable for when you’re short on time and if you don’t have time to prepare one-hour meals – don’t expect yourself to do that. Simplify things.
How do you stay motivated?
“I’m constantly on TV or in magazine articles. Knowing you have to be on camera and knowing you have to be on camera looking and feeling your best is what really helps to keep me motivated. What better motivation could there be, really?” I would have to agree!
What can reader’s expect from your new book 10 Pounds in 10 Days?
Without missing a beat she said, “Honesty.” To me, her passion really began to shine through when she explained this question. She went on to say it’s the most simple diet you’ll ever be on. And that’s not “diet” like in the typical sense, but more along the lines of eating real foods. “Inside you can find grocery lists and go to any store in the nation and find the foods.” She continues, “Readers can also expect to learn how to set goals and achieve goals; there’s a lot of inspirational stories in there. There’s information on learning how to live your life to be happier and create your own destiny for yourself.” I cannot believe how much correlation there is between living a healthy lifestyle and true happiness.
At the conclusion of the interview, Jackie thanked me for calling her and of course I thanked her for her time. (She was in the middle of getting her hair done!) She complimented me on the questions I had for her and closed the call with, “Okay hun, have a great day!”
Let me just say, calling Jackie Warner was definitely a highlight in my life. I love her simple approach to food and fitness and her passion for helping people. She’s definitely not about the quick-fixes and BS and I think that’s part of what people find so appealing about her.
