Perfect Foods Bar Review: High in Protein, Gluten Free But Do They TASTE Good?

I was recently contacted by a representative that offered me some Perfect Foods Bars and I felt like I had to write this review. First of all, I will readily admit to being picky when it comes to foods with extra amounts of protein that are NOT MEAT. I have tried so many different protein shakes and bars and I can easily count on one hand how many of them I actually thought tasted good. But like I said, I’m picky.

First, a Bit of Background

If you are not familiar with the Perfect Foods Bar they are whole food bars that claim to provide energy and no refined sugar. The company itself is small and family owned and they are based in San Diego, California. They have been in business since 1995 and their goal as a company is to provide consumers with REAL FOOD that also tastes good. It’s funny because when you read the list of ingredients on the label, you can actually pronounce – and know – exactly what each ingredient is.

“Each bar is made by hand, by happy people!”

Perfect Foods Bar Nutrition Information

Here is a breakdown of the Almond Butter flavor, which is the flavor I am basing this review on.

  • 305 calories
  • 171 calories from fat
  • 19g fat
  • 479mg potassium
  • 25g carbs
  • 4.4g dietary fiber
  • 18g sugar
  • 13g protein

Although these ingredients are based on the Almond Butter flavor, each of the other flavors is practically the same.

Some other important things to note include the following:

  • Gluten Free
  • 81% Organic Ingredients
  • High in Vitamin E
  • No GMOs
  • No Refined Sugar
  • Made of Over 20 Whole Foods

Super Awesome, Mindi. So How Do They Taste?

I was pleasantly surprised by how good the Almond Butter Perfect Foods Bar was. It literally tasted like I was eating almond butter. Now, I’ve never actually eaten almond butter but I do eat almonds almost daily and I feel that this bar is exactly what almond butter would taste like.

Also, I didn’t find the taste or texture unpleasant at all and I didn’t think there was any kind of gross after taste either. Some protein products are alright at first and then it hits you a few seconds later – but not with these.

Other flavors available include:

  • Cranberry Crunch
  • Carob Chip
  • Fruit and Nut
  • Peanut Butter

Perfect Foods Bar Allergen Information

Let me just stress that Perfect Foods Bars have this information on the back of each bar directly underneath the ingredient list. I wish I had continued reading down to that point because here is my only problem with these bars: I am allergic to eggs. Egg whites, egg yolks ~ anything to do with eggs. These bars are made with “dried whole egg powder” which is the 6th ingredient on the list. That did not sit well with me (literally speaking of course).

Just so you know, this is what the allergen information section reads:

Contains almonds, dairy and eggs. Manufactured in a facility that processes peanuts, soy and other tree nuts. May contain occasional nut shells.

Can I get a big derrrrrrrr, for myself? I’m so, so sad that I cannot eat these. I didn’t realize that there was any form of eggs in this product and it didn’t hit me until about 15 minutes after I ate it. I then had to deal with incredible stomach pains for a good 3 hours.

With that said…the only people this product is NOT good for are those who have allergies to specific ingredients found in these bars. If you don’t have any allergies I think you’ll find the Perfect Foods Bar to be refreshing and delicious. I love the fact that they’re kept refrigerated too. They can’t simply sit on the shelf like other bars because they contain no preservatives!

My Husband is Happy at Least

My husband, who will eat anything you put in front of his face, likes the taste of these bars too. I think I received 12 in all, I had 1 and now there are 3 left. I just got these last week. He did mention that he liked them. :) I haven’t dabbled much with organic foods or whole foods, but if these are any indication of the taste then I might need to experiment a bit more with them.

If I had known they would make me ill because of the egg powder, I wish I would’ve at least tried the Peanut Butter flavor. Peanut butter is my life.

  1. I am encouraged that you didn’t find the almond butter bar to have any bad taste to it. I like the convenience of protein and energy bars, but I have yet to find one that I like the taste. I don’t like almonds, though, so I will have to try the other flavors and hope that they are equally tasty.

  2. I always recommend my clients try to keep bars to one a week. They are convenient but I think it’s important to get in more whole foods like veggies, fruits and lean proteins like fish, chicken, etc.

  3. I can’t wait to try these! It’s so hard to find any protein or energy bars that taste at all good. Most of them are pretty bland or leave a weird after-taste.

  4. Hi Melinda
I recently really like your blog. I recently opened my own and have been just looking around for which other blogs I enjoy. I like your’s a lot. You have a lot of information and it is is very detailed. I will come back to read more.

  5. Will do, for sure! I should have paid better attention. Lesson learned. :)

  6. These sound great! Too bad they contain dairy, as someone with gluten & dairy allergies I am eager to try them, wish I could!

  7. Just ate two of these the last few days, both almond butter. Fantastic taste! But they were $2 each, that’s not entirely in my budget currently.
