Creating a Weight Loss Diet for Women Over 40

While some women embrace reaching age 40, others dread it. In addition to graying hair and wrinkles, many 40-year-old women are worried about the weight they have put on. Putting on more weight during middle age is actually very common because the metabolism slows down dramatically. If you have put on a significant amount of weight after turning 40, don’t let it get you down too much. Instead, use it as a motivation to get healthier. Here are some tips for successfully losing weight at age 40.

Set Realistic Goals

Even though you would love to get down to the weight you were at 20, it might not be realistic. It’s better to set a more attainable goal, so you will be more likely to achieve it. If you set an unrealistic goal, you may be so disappointed when you don’t reach it that you give up your diet altogether. Concentrate on losing weight for your health instead of just for appearance purposes.

Fill Your Diet With Healthy Foods

Once you reach age 40, you won’t be able to get away with eating pizza and cupcakes all the time. You will have to fill your diet with healthier options to lose weight. Include fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and low-fat dairy products in your diet. However, you can eat one of your favorite foods every two weeks to avoid depriving yourself.

Make Exercise Part of Your Life

One of the best ways to stay trim when you reach 40 is to make exercise part of your life. Try to exercise five days a week for at least 45 minutes. Jog around your neighborhood, take a dance class, do yoga in your living room or lift weights at the gym. Do exercises that you enjoy, so you stick with them longer. If you don’t have time to exercise one day, try to still incorporate physical activity into your day. For example, you can take the stairs instead of the escalator at the shopping mall.

Get Enough Sleep

Even if you lead a very busy life, it is still important to get eight hours of sleep at night. When your body doesn’t get enough rest, your food cravings increase, causing you to eat more. To relax yourself before bedtime, take a bath or drink a warm cup of tea.

Even though you will have to work harder to lose weight at age 40, you can still do it if you put your mind to it.

  1. Great motivational blog here. I’m a personal trainer who is in her mid 30′s so not long before I will be 40 too. I notice my metabolism has slowed down with age, even though I work out everyday and eat the right nutrition. However, I have managed to keep the weight down and you can do so too. Just keep on training and eating healthily. :)
